WALKING: A rich landscape of sunken lanes, wooded hills, chalk downs and heath can be explored direct from the Woodshed. The Hangers Way footpath runs through Hawkley village where there is a good pub The Hawkley Inn. Noar Hill rises to the north of Home Farm, famous for its grassland wild flowers and rare butterflies. The South Downs Way is 7 miles to the south.

CYCLING: Miles of quiet country lanes and tracks, the Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield, the N23 cycle route and MOD land at Longmoor Ranges all offer great biking terrain. You can even hire bicycles with electric power assistance, see The Electric Bicycle Network.

LITERARY CONNNECTIONS: Gilbert White's House in Selborne, home of the famous 18th century naturalist - it also exhibits the Oates Collection. Jane Austen's House in Chawton, where she wrote some of her best known works. Chawton House has a library of women's writing 1600-1830. High above Steep is a memorial stone to the WW1 poet Edward Thomas who lived there.

MARKET TOWNS & SHOPS: Alton and Petersfield both have museums, independent shops, restaurants and Farmers' Markets (1st Sunday in the month Petersfield, 2nd Sunday in Alton). Selborne Stores is 2.5 miles away. Bowtells Farm Shop at East Tisted and local shops in Liss, 3.5 miles.

FAMILY ADVENTURE: Go Ape at Alice Holt Forest - tree top adventure. The Watercress Line steam trains run from Alton to Alresford - Thomas the Tank Engine and Santa Specials. Butser Ancient Farm and the Weald & Downland Museum provide fun ways of learning about our rural history. Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium - a hands-on interactive experience.

COAST: West Wittering's Blue Flag beach is 38 miles away - perfect for a day at the seaside

CATHEDRAL CITIES and HISTORIC DOCKYARD, 25 miles: The ancient cathedral cities of Winchester and Chichester are beautiful, historic, thriving regional centres. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard exhibits three groundbreaking ships: Henry VIII's 'Mary Rose', Nelson's 'Victory' and 'Warrior', the first iron clad battleship.
