Hand-made hinges and hasp for blanket chest. Mild steel, hot oil finish. LGH, 1990. The hasp closes over the staple. The latter was set into small predrilled holes whilst red hot so as to make a snug seating but removed in time to ovoid excessive damage to the wood. After cooling, the staple was hammered home and the points turned over and hammered back into the wood on the inside to form a secure fixture. The hinges were designed to allow the lid to open and stop a few degrees past the vertical, making the lid easier to manage and preventing it accidently falling open (and breaking the sides of the box).
