Project construction history
Candlesticks. European oak, H310 x MaxDia51. Base W85 x D85 x T15. Finish: The Dressing Wax. HFW May 2007. Design taken from a small photograph, first used in the late 1980's, see here.
The measuring stick. This is a strip of softwood with a 1:1 scale print of the design taped on to it. The vertical lines which run to the edge of the paper are key measuring points which will be transferred onto the workpiece as pencil marks. The measuring stick has to be used repeatedly as the shape of the workpiece is progressively refined.
The source material: an offcut from a plank of French oak.
Square-section blanks cut from the plank.
A blank mounted in the lathe ready for turning.
The blank turned to a cylinder and the shaping just begun.
Lower part the column nearing completion.
The spigot at the base of the column will be reduced to fit a circular hole in the base, and the waste at the top of the column reduced to a small peg which will be cut off by hand to give a clean finish.
The completed work. Each column has been fitted to its square base, a piece of spring steel wire inserted at the top for candle location, and a coat of The Dressing Wax applied.
The turnery tools used: all except those with brass ferrules were home-made.
